Ice Princess: The Story

A short story   Something written long ago when I thought I was happy - I was~

Once upon a time, there was a prince. The son of a king who had no kingdom, but still he was a prince respected by all. He roamed the countryside looking for a place his father could protect and do noble deeds for, only to find that none were worthy of his father's generosity. One day a fairy princess appeared as an old witch and asked the young prince to kill her. He could not bring himself to do such an act and told her so. The witch said she would cast a spell on him and all of his descendants if he did not comply with her request. The young prince then became sad and laid down his sword, got off of his horse, and walked away into the forest. Soon the forest became black and manners of dark creatures appeared one upon another and offered to help the prince. They wanted the wicked witch dead. These strange beings, none to his liking because they were disgusting still touched his heart and he began to weep. Because of his love, each one of the forest's cast-offs returned to their original birth self and indeed were beautiful to behold. A miracle had happened one said, as its slimy coat was transformed into light and the glow became dim as the transformation continued revealing a truly magnificent emerald green toad that sprang away with content. The forest was no longer ugly but slowly became a natural wonder and a fearless place for a youth's eyes. The witch was never seen again and the forest was kind to the young prince, but he continued to think about the old hag and was worried for his father's progeny. Just then the air cooled, and ice crystals formed on every living thing both plant and animal. The scene was sparkling, so much so that the arrival of the fairy princess was unnoticed. When their eyes met again, his were blinded by the brilliance that also dimmed giving way to a being more than mortal, the most abundant vision he had ever known, his mother. She smiled and said, "Did I disappoint you?" The gallant and brave son of Mother Nature simply replied, "No Mother, that you could never do, but you did scare me.
