The Herculaneum scrolls, over 1,800 ancient papyrus scrolls, were discovered in the 18th century at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, Italy, after being carbonized by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. They represent the only surviving library from antiquity and contain significant philosophical texts, primarily associated with the Epicurean philosopher Philodemus.
